I am reaching out to you regarding saddening news for our Greater
Seattle AHEPA/DOP Family.
It is with a heavy heart that I am sharing
with you the passing of Demitroula (approx. 7+ days) & Wendell (this morning)
Madison. Demitroula & Wendell were an active part of the Seattle community and
Hellenic community, even after their retirement and move from Kirkland
(eastside) to Moses Lake. They came from humble & hard-working farming & dairy
roots. They raised a family of five children (with twins) their family grew and
was blessed with spouses, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
While Wendell served in active duty overseas, Demitroula took care of the
home front and worked for Boeing in a male dominated industry at the time
(1950s). Demitroula served on the Everett and then the Seattle chapters and
district levels, held offices including D22 District Governor, chaired
committees and attended countless conferences, WRSc's, D22 district & national
conventions in service of the Daughters of Penelope. Demitroula joined the
Daughters of Penelope in 1955, she was a lifetime member... As recognized by DOP
HQ and celebrated her 70th year of continuous membership anniversary in 2025.
Their actions spoke volumes as to their beliefs. In addition to supporting
the greater Seattle AHEPA/DOP chapters, Demitroula & Wendell for
decades worked/supported &/or donated to Hellenic community; whether it was
bringing truck &/or trunk loads of eggs for the churches in preparing for Easter
or driving through the pass, to bring pallets of vegetables and donating them to
the church... gifting them to families in need... donating to the community food
banks.
Wendell was a good ole Arkansas boy and wasn't one to waste words
or boast. For years he did the behind the scenes unglamorous hard/strenuous work
of setting up and dismantling booths for the Seattle AHEPA booths for Folk Life
Festivals.
During
covid (& continued thru 2025) they showed philoxenia the Seattle EMS and Firemen
and had an open door of hospitality to come out to their Moses Lake properties
to decompress from the COVID stress by with camping, fishing, cook outs and the
evening stars and quiet/peaceful environment.
